DB was founded on January 24, 1969, when Miryung Construction (now Dongbu Corporation) was established with capital of KRW 25 million and two employees.
In the early 1970s, DB pioneered the Middle East construction market with great success, contributing to Korea's recovery from the oil crisis, and invested all of its overseas earnings in key national industries such as steel, materials, agriculture, logistics and finance — laying the foundation for the group's growth.
Through strategic and planned diversification, DB entered Korea's top 20 business groups in 1990 and its top 10 in 2000 (Fair Trade Commission), overcoming the disadvantage of starting 30–40 years later than Korea's first-generation groups.
DB has constantly taken on new goals and created new paths.
Most affiliates were developed through new licenses or greenfield foundings, growing from entry products into premium ones, and distressed companies were transformed into blue-chip businesses through bold investment and management rationalization. DB pioneered businesses others overlooked — ferroalloys, wire rods, crop protection, fertilizers, seeds, analog semiconductor foundry, advanced glass greenhouses and eco-friendly electric-arc steelmaking — while continuously innovating its management systems and building exemplary governance with autonomous, responsible management.
